How it works

The background

What makes a headline work

It tells the reader exactly what they will get and why it matters to them, in as few words as that takes. Specific beats clever: “7 ways to keep a sourdough starter alive” says more than “The starter secret”.

Headlines and title tags

Your page’s headline and its title tag can differ. The headline greets readers on the page; the title tag is what results pages and AI assistants show, so it needs the keyword early and must fit in about 60 characters.

Do not write for the score

A checklist cannot judge whether a headline is true to its page. If the page does not deliver what the headline promises, readers leave, and that matters far more than any score here.
